Mutual Fund Terminologies – FAQs

SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) is a disciplined way of investing in mutual funds by investing a fixed amount regularly (monthly/quarterly). It helps in rupee cost averaging and building wealth over time.

STP (Systematic Transfer Plan) allows investors to transfer a fixed amount from one mutual fund scheme to another at regular intervals. Often used to move from debt to equity funds gradually.

SWP (Systematic Withdrawal Plan) enables investors to withdraw a fixed sum from their investment at regular intervals. It is used for generating regular income post-retirement or otherwise.

ELSS (Equity Linked Savings Scheme) is a tax-saving mutual fund that qualifies for deduction under Section 80C. It has a lock-in period of 3 years and invests primarily in equities.

NAV (Net Asset Value) is the per-unit price of a mutual fund. It is calculated by dividing the total value of the fund's assets by the number of outstanding units.

Expense Ratio is the annual fee charged by the mutual fund company to manage your investment. It includes administrative and fund management costs.

AUM (Assets Under Management) refers to the total market value of assets that a mutual fund manages on behalf of investors.

In Growth option, profits are reinvested and no payouts are made. In Dividend option, profits are paid out to investors at intervals.

A riskometer is a tool introduced by SEBI to help investors understand the level of risk involved in a mutual fund scheme – ranging from low to high risk.

It is the minimum time period during which an investor cannot redeem the investment. ELSS has a lock-in of 3 years.
